The Sweet History of St. Valentine: Why We Celebrate Love (and Chocolate)!

The Sweet History of St. Valentine: Why We Celebrate Love (and Chocolate)!

Hello friends! 🌸

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and we’re all about love, hugs, and spreading kindness. But have you ever wondered who St. Valentine was and why he’s the reason we exchange cards, gifts, flowers, and, let’s be real… chocolate? Well, we’ve got you covered with a fun, lighthearted dive into the history of Valentine’s Day—with a little twist to make it even more personal for YOU.

The Legend of St. Valentine: A Love Story for the Ages

Believe it or not, there wasn’t just one Valentine—there were actually several saints named Valentine, all known for their kindness. But let’s focus on the most famous one!

Valentine was a priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor believed single men made better soldiers because they didn’t have the distractions of wives and families. Valentine, a firm believer in the power of love, secretly married young couples to help them avoid the emperor’s ban.

But, of course, he was eventually caught. His defiance led to his imprisonment, and sadly, he was executed.

Here’s the heartwarming part: while in jail, Valentine befriended the jailer’s daughter. They would talk and share stories, and before his death, he sent her a note signed, “From Your Valentine.” A simple gesture, but one that made this day unforgettable. 💌

What Does This Have to Do With You?

So, the next time you pass by a display of Valentine’s Day cards, just remember: this isn’t just about gifts or big romantic gestures—it’s about standing up for love, kindness, and friendship.

Now, here’s where it gets even more personal. One of our favorite non-profits, the Choose Love Movement, (Sandy Hook, CT) has a mission that perfectly aligns with the spirit of Valentine’s Day. This movement is all about choosing love in every situation—whether in relationships, communities, or even during life’s challenges. It’s a reminder that love isn’t just something we celebrate once a year—it’s something we choose every day.

Love is All Around

Whether you’re celebrating with a partner, your BFF, or even just your favorite book, St. Valentine’s story reminds us that love takes many forms. And guess what? It’s all about spreading kindness and embracing the love we have—big or small.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re inviting you to join us in the Choose Love Movement and make love a daily choice—whether it’s a handwritten note, a smile for a stranger, or sharing love with a charitable cause. There’s no wrong way to celebrate love, but one thing’s for sure: the world could use a lot more of it! 💕

And speaking of choosing love—did you see the Super Bowl this year? If you did, you might have noticed a powerful message displayed in both end zones: “Choose Love.” The NFL highlighted this same message at the 2025 Super Bowl as part of their campaign encouraging kindness and compassion. It’s amazing to see how this movement is catching on, and we’re so inspired to make love a daily choice. 💘

Fun Fact: Valentine’s Day & Chocolate? Oh Yeah!

Did you know St. Valentine’s story led to the modern tradition of giving chocolate? Back in the day, chocolate was believed to be an aphrodisiac (a fancy way of saying it made people feel all romantic). Fast forward to today, and chocolate has become a Valentine’s Day staple. So, next time you bite into a chocolate truffle, thank Valentine for making it all possible. Be sure to check our locally made chocolates by Melt Chocolatier! 🍫💘
