A New England Staycation

A New England Staycation

It’s been about 6 weeks since we started to socially distance ourselves and it’s likely we still have a few weeks to go. By now, we’re all craving a slice of our old lives. I was sorting through pictures last weekend and it was fun to reminisce with my family about the “good old days” (pre-COVID 19) when we spent weekends and vacations in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Sarah and Matt started to dream about getting oysters from the Matunuck Oyster Bar. Patrick was talking about going clamming, then eating the homemade New England Clam Chowder. For me, I miss sitting on the sea wall by the Towers eating clam strips from Monehan’s, kayaking down the Narrows River and happy hour on the beach at sunset. There were also countless trips to Iggy’s for  Clam Cakes (you can actually buy the mix on their website) and of course there’s Brickley’s homemade ice cream, which is a must if you are in the area. There are so many special memories along the coast for us; I bet you have your own list of favorites as well. So, while it isn’t the same as being there, it might be fun to look up a favorite recipe, buy what you can from one of your favorite stores in the area and have it shipped to you. Break out those pictures, cherish the memories and bring those warm feelings to your home right now.

  1. Make your at-home event as festive and colorful as you can. Surrounding yourself with certain colors can make you feel happy too. For me, just looking at the bright colors in these beautiful Flour Sack Towels  noticeably changed my mood for the better. They had such a noticeable effect on me that I decided to look up the impact of color on a person (by the way, when in doubt pick shades of blue). If the subject of color grabs your curiosity as much as it did mine, here’s a couple of links to learn more: the first is about the psychology of color and second is about how color makes you feel. It’s fun to learn about this sort of thing, you might even decide to paint your room a new color!
  2. Order some Fresh Lobsters, or Oysters from your favorite vendors. These vendors and many others from Maine, will ship them directly to you. Don’t forget to pick up an oyster shucker, baking and serving dishes from Piper and Dune.
  3. Try some essential oils or candles to awaken your senses too!

So, think about the happy times ahead while taking advantage of this time with your family during the quarantine. Cook a favorite meal and if the weather is nice, bring your picnic blanket, outside, grab one of Piper and Dune’s pints and cups and prepare to relive those vacation feelings right at home.

Have fun and Explore What Excites You!
