Sunday June 19th is Father's Day and we’d like to honor all the Dads out there who not only show up for their children, but who help them to grow, learn, and thrive- even as young adults.
Pictured above is my husband Matt and my son Patrick when he was just a little guy. My kids will tell you that their Dad has a great sense of humor and he knows how to have fun. They might also tell you that he likes to lecture in a teaching-moment kind of way. He’s always trying to prepare them with life skills. However, one thing is certain, he loves them more than anything. I wish that kind of Dad for all of you and your children.
And, for all of the Dads who are in the thick of parenting your young kids, enjoy it because it really does go fast. Life can be hard sometimes and we feel for you… we know it’s not easy, but as you already know, those days really are some of the best days of your life.
Looking back, Matt and I did our best to make sure our kids had a safe and loving home. Sure, those days were crazy at times. I was commuting 2 hours/day back and forth between Southbury and Wilton CT. We had quite the care system in place. I dropped the kids off at daycare in the morning and Matt picked them up at night. We had very little time to do everything we needed to do in a day. I remember Matt worrying he would get fired from his job because there was still so much work left to do after he picked up the kids; but he somehow managed the chaos. Matt was a creative dad… the kids would love how he managed the stress. They once told me “Dad showed up in our R.V. today.” He gave them a snack, and set them up to watch movie reruns on the VCR until he was finished meeting with a client.
Perhaps our kids had a non-traditional upbringing, but we made it work and you will too. There’s no book or training course that can prepare you for fatherhood. You wing it and hope you make decisions that are in the best interests of your child. If your Dad/husband is loving, if he parents with humor and hugs their children tightly, they are the good ones. And with every hug he gives, every joke he shares, every moment he stops to listen, your children will thrive… we celebrate those Dads!
So pick up something special for Dad or do what my son Patrick always does and get him something you like so you can enjoy together (ha, ha!)
